Who invited you donkey? You aren't even ready to go!

So we have the papel picado. We have the delicious menu. We have our smiling faces. We have the lovely weather. We have the great space. And the wonderful teen chefs. And the door prizes. And the baskets of food. And the coffee. What are we missing?

Oi. We almost forgot the piñatas! This week the students of Blank Plate focus on the way the environment will look and feel keeping with the theme of ultimate Latin summer party, or Gran Pachanga, and set out to create some colorful, candy-filled paper mache piñatas. Made from simple materials–cardboard, glue and deftly cut paper into color fringe–our team of creative minds build horse shaped forms from scratch.  As a team, we cook in the kitchen; and as a team, we come together again to bring the ritual and flavor of colorful latin influenced cuisine and tradition in all that we do. In case, you were ever curious about what we do, we are including a play-by-play construction of a couple of our piñatas in our gallery below.

Also there still space for you at the party! Sign up to reserve your plate today! We have amazing food to serve you and for a chosen few some really fabulous door prizes!

Blank Plate

Design. Cook. Transform. Blank Plate Project is a creative culinary “design/cook” program, begun in Hunts Point, South Bronx that sparks community development through a combination of design-led imaginative activities and chef-led demonstrations for weekly community dinners, or culminating in a community event. By learning through a design sensibility, applied personal experiences, and industry-relevant culinary skills, students develop the creative capital, neighborhood stewardship, and food justice advocacy skills necessary for their own success and for the future of their community. Over the course of each Blank Plate workshop, students learn creative culinary skills and plan a final dinner event of their own imagination. Blank Plate is a different kind of cooking class. Together, we design, cook, and transform.
